History of the Apple Core Band

In the year 1976 three small communities located in Upper Adams County formed town bands to perform in area events in Celebration of our Country's Bicentennial Birthday. Robert "Bobby" Gillelan who is a trumpet player from Biglerville decided to combine these small town bands from Arendtsville, Bendersville and Biglerville and organized what is now known as "The Apple Core Band"

The Band originally met in an upstairs room above the Ditzler Antique Shop for many years. After Bob Gillelan moved on to receive schooling to become a Priest, Mr. Charles Yost took over the reins as Director. The band continued on marching in parades and bringing entertainment to the local area.

Then due to illness Mr. Yost stepped aside and Robert Zeigler took to the podium as the leader. About that same time the National Apple Museum was opened and the band moved practices to that building on 154 W. Hanover St. in Biglerville, and the National Apple Museum became the band's sponsor.

After several active years the band continued to grow but discontinued marching, focusing on more concert events, and Mr. Zeigler stepped aside. Virginia "Ginny" Martin took over as band Director.

The next change didn't occur until July of 1999 when the current Director Donna Kime conducted her first performance with the band in the center circle of New Oxford, PA.

The Apple Core Band has well over 25 active members and many substitutes and performs at 20 to 25 events every year. It continues to be an all volunteer band with young members who are just learning, to the well seasoned older members who have kept their musical talents active over the years.
